ROLE: Urban Design

Public housing in New York, primarily managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), is a vast network of residential buildings intended to provide affordable living spaces for low-income residents. Despite its crucial role in addressing housing shortages, the reality of life in many of these developments is often bleak. Residents frequently contend with deteriorating infrastructure, such as crumbling walls, leaky roofs, and malfunctioning elevators. Overcrowding and inadequate maintenance exacerbate these conditions, leading to health and safety hazards.

Colorful murals and community gardens sporadically brighten the otherwise grey and drab exteriors, hinting at the residents' resilience and spirit. These vibrant splashes of color serve as beacons of hope and community solidarity amidst the pervasive neglect.

BLOKPOP rivals these environments while also creating vibrant vignettes for New Yorkers. Despite the harsh living conditions, these artistic and natural touches symbolize the enduring vitality, life and aspirations of those who call New York's public housing their home.
